HISTORY
|
|
The name “Buca”:In 1235, when loyanis, the king of Iznik let determine the place name “KOHL” which is near the king road is mentioned. Afterwards this name was changed to GOINA, BUGIA and BUCA.
In western languages the name “BUCA” is seen as BOUDJA, BUDJIA, BOUGIEH, and BORJA.The name BUCA is first seen in 1688 in the documents of the French Consulate when it moved the BUCA.
A Look at the History: When in 628 B.C. the Lydians conguered İzmir the city and its population dispersed and the inhabitants of İzmir started to move to litte nearby settlement places. This change for med the first foundations of the many settlements that we see around İzmir today.Buca is one of these settlements. It is known that from Antique Era on there had been a settlement in Buca, In 1868 in the north-eastern part of Buca, a woman bust was found and this bust is still exhibited in the English (British) Museum in London. Moreover, some column heads with Byzantine cross carvings on them, marble pavements which are thought to belong to the ancient “ARTEMIS TEMPLE”, Byzantine coins found around the Forbes Pavilion (Villa) and the remnants of a Roman Castle on the Gürçeşme (Kançeşme) road reveal that in the antigue era developed societies had lived in this area. During the lon assault the inhabitants of İzmir who headed to Buca settled in Dereköy, Kangölü and Kozağacı regions. It is stated that in our recent history that Buca had been a Greek (of Turkish nationality) village and that during the same period Greek of Turkish nationality, jew and in harmony. It is also stated that European businessmen lived in Buca and that this had helped and contributed a great deal to Buca's development and prosperity. Buca where Greek, Jew and Turkish people had lived together also became summer place (holiday place) of English-French-Italian and Dutch Levantine group companies who traded and did industrial business this feature in the recent past. Buca, which has seen many civilizations and whose history dates back to 130 B.C. is a town of culture and history.

One of the most important towns of İzmir with its cultural and art activities; the center of culture and art is Buca Municipality Culture and Art center.
By organizing Education-Science festivals international Film Festivals, Turkish Classical Music, Turkish Pop Music and Dance Competitions, Poem Presentation, panels, conferences, and hobby course activities we integrate with the people of Buca.

TRANSPORTATION-COMMUNICATION
|
|
Buca which is 9 km in the south-east part of İzmir can be reached by railway and highway. On the railway line the comes to Buca there are regular suburb trains that work on the Alsancak –Buca line. Regarding the highway connection; it has a connection to the İzmir-Aydın highway and it is at a 15 minute distance to Bornova, Gaziemir and the Menderes Airport. From the town center it is at a 20 minute distance to Konak Square.

POPULATION

|
Regarding the population increase Buca is one of the most rapidly developing towns in Turkey. Many years ago the area which had been a summer place (Holiday place) with its vineyards and forests became a day by day growing settlement place after the heavy migrations to area. According to the most recent data the population of Buca is given to be around 500.000.

EDUCATION
|
|
Our town which is rich in respects of Education and training has 50 primary and secondary schools and 14 High Schools.At the university level it has one of Turkey’s most prominent universities; the 9’th September University (Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi) with some of its faculties in Buca.

|
HEALTH AND SOCIAL INSTITUTIONS
|
|
The greatest institution giving health service is the Buca Social Insurance Institution Hospital (SSK Hastanesi) which was built in 1958 and renovated in 2000. In addition to it there are many private polyclinics and village clinics (Sağlık Ocağı). The İzmir Municipality old Age Asylum and Girl Raising Dormitory are also in the borders of our town.

Buca Belediyesi, Çevre ve Orman Bakanlığı tarafından 27 Ekim 2010 tarihinde Resmi Gazete'de yayınlanan "Atıksu Altyapı ve Evsel Katı Atık Bertaraf Tesisleri Tarifelerinin Belirlenmesinde Uyulacak Usul ve Esaslara İlişkin Yönetmelik" esasına göre evsel katı atık tarifelerini belirledi.
